Off Center?

I hope everyone is having a great summer! We are in denial over here that SCHOOL starts back in 2 WEEKS. In 2 weeks I will be crying over enjoying my very last day of summer 2013. I have mixed emotions as I do every year. On the one hand, all 3 of my children will be at the same school on the same schedule. But… my youngest also starts REAL Kindergarten which makes me a little sad. Not looking forward to getting up at the crack of dawn and doing carpool twice a day. But… we are already getting up sort of early (see later part of post) and entertaining them all day can be exhausting. Looking forward to the routine. Not looking forward to homework X 3 and all the tears that first month or so which I like to call the adjustment period. You know.. the “I can’t BeLiEvE you are making me do homework when it is so pretty outside!!!” (lots of drama and tears)

Anyway… I have been doing a little work the past 2 weeks. This morning I had on my to-do list a Baby Elephant onesie with “Blake” underneath. I did a post a couple of years ago about designs that are centered, but have features that make them APPEAR off center. It’s not a design flaw. It’s just that some designs have tails, noses, trunks, vines, etc. that throw the main part of the design off center while the entire designs itself IS, in fact, centered. Here is a great example!

This is my screen in Sew What Pro, and as you can see, the elephant is centered and the name is centered underneath. (p.s. I used Monogram Wizard Plus “Kazoo” font) So everything is centered, but because the main body of the elephant is to the right a bit, the whole thing appears off center. The name needs to line up more with the feet of the elephant to make it appear centered.

I kept Blake centered, and moved the elephant to the left. Even though the elephant is now NOT centered, it appears centered because the name and feet line up more. I could save this as is and stick it on my machine to sew, but my machine is going to center the whole thing again so it will turn out off center. Are you confused yet?? Before I save a design, I press the CENTER button in SWP one last time, and had I pressed it it would have shifted this whole design to the right and then Blake would have been off center (to the right). So…….

I thought… why don’t I add something to the design that I won’t sew, but that will make and keep the design centered on the onesie. In the previous blog post I mentioned, I added a word or name underneath and then centered the applique and did not sew the name or word underneath. Today I thought.. why not add a “.”? So as you can see below, I added a dot (MWP Motif SySerif 26) to the right. My name and design is “centered” looking on the screen so it will appear centered on the onesie. The dot is also last in all of my steps, so I will just skip it!

Here is the finished onesie. As you can see, the name Blake is centered and the legs of the elephant are centered over the name, therefore the whole design appears centered on the onesie!

I also did a backpack today so I snapped a few pics to share. This is your typical Jansport backpack. I used a seam ripper to remove the Jansport label (which did not “go” with the cute hot pink backpack). It took me all of 3 minutes to get the label off.

Here it is after I removed the label. A lint brush took care of the loose threads.

This picture is a smidge blurry but I covered where the label was with our Frame Patch 5 (minus the inner patch) and MWP Party Time monogram. Keep this in mind when you are out backpack shopping! I also did this last year with some mini designs ~ see this post!

We have also been working on new designs, and this is a Mini Applique Pumpkin I did on a onesie the other day. Mini designs are great for onesies & baby gowns.

And now to the reason we are getting up early… we added to our family last week! Our kids have been b-e-g-g-i-n-g for a dog for the past few years. We kept saying “when Mallory is older” “when Mallory is 5”. Well, Mallory turned 5 in February so they put us under some serious pressure. We were able to put them off until August so that we could enjoy our vacations this summer out of town, and I found this little girl while at the beach a couple of weeks ago. All of the kids were out of town last Thursday when I picked her up, so Jeff & I were able to enjoy {and prepare} her for a couple of days with no kids. Browder got home from camp Saturday morning and was shocked and surprised when he saw her! The other 2 got back Sunday afternoon and were also shocked and surprised! They LOVE her, although I think the newness is wearing off a bit. She is a Maltese and we named her Maggie (or Maggy as Browder spells it on Instagram). She is teeny tiny but has already grown since we got her!

If you have any puppy training tips, please let me know! We are crate training her to sleep and potty training her to go outside. The tee tee part is going well with only 1 accident (that I have FOUND). The poo poo part is a bit more challenging. Those are NOT raisinettes we keep finding all over the rug. She likes fabric! We try to keep her busy and entertained with her toys.

Mallory gave her this little stuffed pink puppy, so they took a nap earlier today.

The kids LOVE her!

This is where we found her the other night after she first met Mallory & G and had all 5 of us swooning over her. This is the back corner of our den behind the chair. She is precious, and hopefully the potty training and sleeping-all-night will kick in. Again, any tips? Email me!!

Dear Diary,

It has been wayyyyyyyy too long since my last entry. Life is crazy. Love, Rosemary

Gosh, how do weeks go by without me sharing with you all the excitement of my life? Easily I tell you! A) because like I said, life is crazy. B) because said life is not that exciting. This past weekend we went on our annual camping trip to FDR State Park near Callaway Gardens, over yonder in Georgia. The first year we went, there were 3 families and we only took Browder. Mallory may not have been alive at the time? Anyway, our group has grown over the years and this past weekend we had 10, yes 10 families, camp out for the weekend. You may count 11 here, but that’s only because an extra family met us at Callaway Gardens for the day Sunday. 10 families = 22 KIDS! The Gulledge camping motto is “We only bring some of our kids” (seriously, we have a plaque). Mallory did not go, but maybe next year. We had a BLAST!! We’re talking tents, campfires, smores, tromping through the woods to the bath house, and every meal with 42 people. This is something that hopefully these kids will never forget!

This was our “Church in the woods” service Sunday morning. How could you NOT spend 3 days in the woods and not PRAISE GOD!! It was really beautiful! I am a city girl all the way, but it’s almost a necessity to escape to the woods for a few days at least ONCE a year.

Remember the “I will flush” saga of October 2012. Fast forward to November, and you will find the “I will hang my towel up” saga of 2012. I thought it was working, until this morning I found a wet towel on the window seat that had been there all night long….. This is my exciting life!

I have been doing quite a bit of work the past few weeks and here are some of the tees I’ve done. I’m about to wrap things up for a while (no more work). This is the Embroidery-Boutique Chunky Alphabet that I use and post about a lot. I used Monogram Wizard Plus Library font for the E & J beside it. I use this font a lot as well!

Here is the Applique Cafe Dinosaur 3 design and I can’t really capture in a photo how cute this is on a red shirt! These are Old Navy tees btw. They are super soft!

Our new Zig Zag Reindeer design which is super cute and zig zag is a lot faster than satin. This was a tricky shirt to do ~ I chose to center the reindeer with the initials off to the right side. It’s easier said than done b/c my machine automatically centers the entire design. More on that later if I ever figure out how I did it!

Our Dog Truck design. I love red and brown on gray!

Lastly, here are some burp cloths I did recently for a friend who was giving them as a gift to twins. This is our Flower 5 design and it looks great w/ initials inside (Monogram Wizard Plus “Master Circle”). I use Master Circle ALL THE TIME as well! This fabric is Robert Kaufman Bright Spot On.

Thanksgiving is next week! Applique Cafe is having a “Give Thanks Sale”. Thanksgiving designs are 1/2 off (Halloween too ~ they are categorized together). The rest of our designs are 35% off through Thursday, November 29th ~ www.appliquecafe.com

Above is our Frame Patch 2 design with MWP Camp font. I just got the Camp font not too long ago and I like it! Here are some of our new designs we’ve listed recently, and we hope to have several more ready this week!

You can find all of our new designs by clicking ALL DESIGNS on our website.

Flush…

Good afternoon! I haven’t posted in a while and I’m so sorry! It’s hard to sit down and put two thoughts together these days. I have some great new fabric and a giveaway post that I’ll work on for later this week. I’m apologizing in advance for this post. It deals with mice and toilets!! That brings me to my first photo. This pretty much sums up our daily challenge around the Gulledge household. We have a 6+ year old who doesn’t deem it important to flush the toilet. Jeff has sat all 3 kids down on numerous occasions to discuss flushing, the pros and cons, how to, etct. His sit-downs don’t seem to be working for our precious middle child we refer to as “G”. Last week he (G) thought it was a good idea when we proposed (jokingly) that he write FLUSH 10 times on paper to help him remember.  We then decided to hang it on the wall for further enforcement. It seems to be working! Although I haven’t been upstairs in a few days… Looks like we need to refill the TP too…

We had a 4 day holiday weekend this weekend, so we took a little family vacay down to Orange Beach, AL. The weather was amazing and we had a wonderfully fun weekend! Nothing really exciting happened, but we had some great eats and some fun on the lazy river. I won’t mention the football watching (Auburn = boo).

While in OBA, we spent some time Sunday at the park. As a bonus we got to walk around the Scarecrow Fest which was really cool! It appeared as though different businesses decorated a scarecrow and we took a few pictures of our favorites. This one is of the scarecrow who is *scared* of 3 crows that were perched on top of the cross. You may not see them well in the photo. This one won a ribbon.

There were 2 rows of scarecrows in a big U shape, so tons of them!  Everything from Santa Claus to Mickey Mouse and some I didn’t understand.

This was a scuba scarecrow and also won a ribbon.

This one also won a ribbon and was Sissy’s favorite!

Now to our other latest battle aside from getting G to flush… I noticed a week or so ago a little something on my desk. It looked like a piece of pencil lead. I threw it away and then thought nothing of it. A night or two later I was woken up a couple of times during the night and *heard* noises. I thought it was our ice maker and again, thought nothing of it and didn’t get out of bed to see what it was. The next morning I decided to investigate and low and behold, I see a drip of something on my desk (tee tee I presume) and also see another pencil lead on Jeff’s desk. You guessed it, a MOUSE!! Luckily our pest control guy came that day and confirmed that my pencil lead was indeed mouse poop. He gave me 2 mammo-jammo XXL glue traps to go along with the 6 I purchased earlier that morning. For at least 4 nights we left the sewing room armed with these glue traps and got nothing! One morning I even found a pencil lead in front of my keyboard, as if to say “HA HA POO ON YOU”!!!! After several days of nothing, we forgot about the mouse.

Here are all of our traps with cheese. 8 booby traps in all. Do you know how much trouble it is to do this every night? We couldn’t leave them during the day for fear the kids would get themselves stuck.

We had 2 per desk and then one on each wall.

The mouse was forgotten. We went out of town this weekend and thought nothing of him. Didn’t even leave out a trap! We assumed he had moved on. Yesterday afternoon as I was unpacking from our trip, I was in the bathroom headed to my closet and A MOUSE RAN RIGHT BY ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I screamed several times (loud enough for him to freeze in his tracks). When I say I screamed, I mean I screamed the loudest I’ve screamed in a loooonnnnngggg time. He then ran to the wall in our bedroom by the door and froze again (and pooped). Jeff was “on the other side” with the kids behind him so he lined up the glue traps in the doorway and passed me a broom and I was able to shew him through the door and on to the trap. VICTORY!!!! I will spare you the pic Browder took with his Ipod and I will say, Mallory’s response was “awwwww he’s cuuuuuute”!!!!! They also said his legs were crossed on the trap.

Of course now I am super paranoid thinking every lego on the floor is a mouse and turned the light on in the bathroom all 4 times I had to get up last night. I am hopeful he doesn’t have a friend or relative and I can only imagine the “Open Mouse Party” that might have been held here this weekend while we were away. Anyway, mission accomplished… for now. We live next to an empty lot, so I assume that is where he came from. Not exactly sure how he got inside.

Not much else going on around here. I have some great new fabric and a fabric giveaway I hope to post by the end of the week, so stay tuned for that. Oh… a few more photos…

Last month our friends at Lake Martin Voice Realty  helped us celebrate 10K Facebook fans! Sadly this was the only photo I got from the evening, which included a cab-van ride to downtown Montgomery and a fabulous dinner at Central! You don’t see a lot of cabs in my neighborhood, or Montgomery for that matter, so it was interesting in itself. It was really a fun evening and we appreciate John and Palmer for making 10,000 fans such a big deal! There are lots of other sites who have double that or even more, but we like to think we got ours the “organic” way without paid ads and massive fan drives. We’re amazed every day to see the new fans pop up on our page and we hope they are enjoying our designs as much as we enjoy making them! BTW we are now up to 10,717, but who’s counting!!

Here are a few pictures sent to me from Erin at The Clutch Boutique. She wanted to share how she “tacks” down bows on her appliques so you can’t see the stitching. She uses the “button sew” feature on her sewing machine and is able to tack down each side of the bow under the middle piece. Her customers love it because it not only keeps the bow in place but both layers are sewn together so the little darlings can’t pull it loose.

I’m not sure how she ties her bows or what kind of sewing machine she has. This is just her suggestion if you have a sewing machine w/ a button sew feature! BTW this is the Applique Cafe Ghost Patch design!

Looks great! Cute font too! I have emailed asking what the font is and will update that as soon as I hear from her! Update: Font is Carmen from www.8clawsandapaw.com!

Have a great rest of the week!
