Day 2 and 3

 Here are photos from Day 2 and 3 of the Gulledge Kitchen Renovation of 2011. I cannot stress enough how NON-renovation type people we are. This is big for us to endure, and there is more to come (our bathroom goes under the jackhammer after the new year). We are using a guy named Aaron Corbin for all of the tile work and some of the other projects. He has been WONDERFUL! They have worked so quickly, are here BY 7:00 and we’ve just been super impressed with him on this project! Below you’ll see on Day 2 the floors were mudded to level everything out and prepare the floors for new tile.

 

I guess instead of removing backsplash, they just cut out the wall/sheetrock? This is where they replaced it.

 

Day 3, which was yesterday (Thursday). They laid most of the tile and they are still working on this today. I believe it will “sit” over the weekend and Monday they will begin grouting.

 

I mentioned that our den is now in our bedroom.

Yesterday Sissy got curtains installed! The curtains were actually the previous owners’ of this house. She had them in her daughters room upstairs. Mallory had this same fabric (striped) in her baby nursery and all of her wall hangings matched it, so I was super excited that the owner gave these to me! They were also in a bigger bay window upstairs, so they fit perfectly! The only problem was that they weren’t very long, so I had the lime linen valance made to give them some height. Her bed skirt is also made of the lime linen. Once I get it all together I will post a picture! The lady who made this stuff for me (valance, bed skirt, bolster, etc) is now making 2 lime linen euro shams. We’re also replacing M’s bathroom cabinets so I’ll post pics when all that is done and her room is complete (with her 16 cubby Expedit in her closet)!

I WISH WISH WISH I could sew stuff like this!!

Here is a shot of the current state of our den. It houses our appliances, the fridge and a tad bit of dust on the floor. Just a tad!

 

Have a great weekend! I will take pics of today’s progress when they are done later this afternoon. I’m home alone this morning (all kids in school finally) so I’m sewing a couple of new AC samples and doing a few things around the house! Yesterday was G’s first day of school, and I think I was the only parent who dropped him off in the carpool line while all the other mothers walked their children in with cameras around their neck! So, today I took a pic of the 2 of them as Sissy started today!

I-K-E-A…

 Tuesday was a BIG DAY! Jeff & I took a day trip to IKEA in Atlanta (left at 8:00 am and got back at 6:00 pm). It was as magical as I had imagined! We got a cinnamon roll first thing. I got a tiny piece of it and Jeff ate the rest. I figured he deserved it for driving me to Atlanta to go shopping.

 We went through the store (3 times, both levels) and made our shopping list of what we wanted. I got a 25 Cubby Expedit for my sewing room and a 16 Cubby Expedit for Mallory’s closet. We also got 2 doors for the office Expedit, a divider and 11 baskets. If you are unfamiliar with Expedit, search for it on Pinterest! I’ve been pining away over them for weeks! Here’s a picture of Jeff after we loaded up our cart with our goods. Not looking forward to put-it-all-together day! As you can see, and as I mentioned, we got 11 baskets. Why 11? They have gobs of basket styles, and I liked the Knipsa baskets, but they smelled like jute. We ended up with the Pjas baskets and we got the last 11 in the store – we robbed all of the displays we could find! I liked them because you can see through them (good for fabric) and because they had less of the jute smell. (I LOVE burlap, but can’t stand the smell – same thing.)

I took this shot of the MASSIVE aisles in the customer self serve part of the store! We had no idea how Ikea worked. It was quite fun! I’m anxious to go back with some girlfriends who wouldn’t mind wandering the store for hours!

It all fit in the Suburban quite nicely, and they had helpers who would help you load (so I could have gone solo had I known that). I’ll be taking prayer requests when we actually have to put all this together. We also ate at P.F. Changs while in Atlanta (lettuce wraps – love) and hit Ballards Backroom (aka Ballard Designs). I resisted Forever 21 and H&M when we went to eat.

While we were in “the ATL”, it was demo day in our KITCHEN! They did a lot while we were away! I’ve taken pics each day so it’s neat to follow the progression. These pics are from DAY 1 (Demo Day) only! Today they are already laying tile (and I will post those pics tomorrow).

They removed all cabinets and most of the tile floor on Day 1.

 

They also cut out part of the wall to open our kitchen up more in to our den. We have a plastic wall in our den as you can see which helps with the dust.

AND the laundry room!

Nice! This is all now gone, and they are already laying new tile (after mudding and leveling out the floors). It’s very exciting to look in each day to see what they are doing.

We lost our den this week (the plastic wall is a joke) and had to move Mallory upstairs. It’s a MESS, but pretty well contained in the kitchen and den area. I’ll post more pics tomorrow of Day 2 and 3! The floors should be done Tuesday with new cabinets MAYBE going in next Thursday. Then appliances go back in, countertops, backsplash and we have a few other projects to do at the end of this!

Jeff & I are about the last people on earth to do any type of renovation, so this is exciting! Looking forward to all the before and afters! Stay tuned!

The Kitchen

Last post I showed a photo of my Coop veggies/fruits from last Monday. One day last week I actually cooked (and my sister/brother in law were quite shocked at that sight when they dropped by?). AND, last night some neighbors invited us over for dinner and I was able to whip up a quite tasty salad from my Coop veggies (all organic – romaine, roma tomatoes, cucumber and I even made ranch dressing). When you see the pictures of our kitchen below, you might be impressed that I was able to whip up anything. It was tricky cutting my tomatoes and cucumber with a butter knife but it worked. Anyway… last week I made Parmesan Zucchini Sticks which were served with Marinara. I got the recipe off Pinterest. I would post the recipe, but all in all they were OK, so I’m not going to post it. The point here is that I was COOKING!

I also blanched some green beans and cooked them in a skillet with a little Olive Oil and soy sauce (salt & pepper too). Now they were YUMMY!

 

Here is a pic of the zucchini sticks before they were cooked. I’m thinking I just might not be a huge zucchini person.

Oh, and I baked the organic potatoes. Here is a photo of my plate. The buns were Pork Tenderloin sliders I had purchased from a friend who has just started doing a little pick-up-meal business. Impressed? Don’t be. It was yummy though! My kids were THRILLED (NOT!!) with this meal!

Last week I did this Megaphone design on this orange gingham A-line dress. Instead of using flannel for this raggy design, I used an extra layer of fabric instead. In this case, gingham! I love how it turned out!

So my layers are:

bottom: navy gingham

next (going up): navy (actually the other side of the Fabric Finders navy w/ orange dots.

Typically I say use flannel underneath each fabric layer for raggy designs, but I think I like the gingham! You can see 2 other posts on Raggy Designs under Helpful Posts up top!

So now the big story… tomorrow is DEMOLITION day! They are removing all of our kitchen, eating area and laundry room cabinets and the tile from our kitchen, eating area, pantry and laundry room. They will then lay tile again and then put new cabinets and countertops in. This process should take a couple of weeks. I’m super excited, but also super nervous about the amount of dust I’m going to be cleaning and inhaling. Did I mention they are tearing out part of a wall? There are also some funky arches in our foyer we hope to remove. Anywho… we’ve cleared out the kitchen completely and our kitchen is now located in our foyer and dining room. Our den furniture is in our bedroom (which I forgot to take a picture of)!

This should be a very interesting couple of weeks with 3 kids, who will all be going to and from school, and soccer, and…

Here are my BEFORES. I plan to take pics and document this process since we are not a go-in-and-renovate kind of family. I’ll also post a picture of the tile I have and cabinet samples.

The desk area will become a buffet type cabinet and the cabinets on the left will be gone completely and replaced with some piece of furniture (console table or something).

Bye Bye 1980s kitchen!! Actually the appliances are new. The cabinets are original I think!

Side note: I found these 2 lovelies at Highlands Antique Mall in Dothan, AL Saturday. Both of these were $40 $50 (after I paid for the little vase that Browder accidentally broke). Not sure where they are going? If we could redo our mantle using these I’d be thrilled!

Here is our lovely laundry room. If you read about when we bought this house, you’ll know that below the sheets piled on the cabinet is a lovely hair-washing sink. This wall will have cabinets all the way across with a utility cabinet on the right side, and a laundry tub in place of the hair-washing sink! The wire shelf will be gone too.

We’re 86’ing the built in ironing board and the top cabinets on this wall. The base cabinet will be bigger (for folding laundry).

Cubbies for the 3 kiddies will go here. This house has a great laundry room!

Here is another view of the kitchen, and all of the ceiling cabinets will be gone, and the sink cabinets will become an island!

 

I will post pics along the way with good Before/After pics when we’re done!

Tomorrow Jeff & I are going to Atlanta FOR THE DAY to go to Ikea! Our Mission, Expedit cubbies for my sewing room and also Mallory’s closet! I am SO excited!! I will post pics of all that too!
